The Wall Street Journal’s Geoffrey Fowler and Joanna Stern pen a nice piece (subscription required) today on why we in the U.S. ought to be getting envious about Chinese smartphones.
Some highlights:
- Messaging apps as operating system
- Phones that are really wallets
- You can get a new phone without waiting…and waiting…
- Phones really are wallets
It’s worth a read, particularly as you ponder the notion of technology leapfrogging. If you’re not hung up on one generation of technology (say, desktop-/laptop-based landline Internet), it creates great opportunities for innovation in the next generation (mobile first) that aren’t bound by business models developed in the prior generation.
It’s not just about crossing the chasm. It’s about evading the chasm altogether.
